Two more re-sign

Dirk Nowitzki is reportedly staying with the Dallas Mavericks.  The deal they have worked out is worth $80 million for four years.

Also, Paul Pierce and the Boston Celtics have come to an agreement on a four year deal worth $61 million.

Neither one of these deals is surprising.  Both have players have played their entire careers with these teams and now will probably never leave.

Pierce and Nowitzki had another year on their contract but had opt out clauses.  They both used it.  By opting out and re-resigning they can install a no trade policy.

Scoop’s Suggestion

ESPN columnist Scoop Jackson doesn’t usually have good ideas, but a few weeks ago, he came up with an idea I think the Chicago Bulls should consider if they can’t sign Lebron James, Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade or any duo combination.

Jackson made a guest appearance on The Basketball Jones podcast June 11th.  During his NBA conversation with J.E. Skeets and Tas Melas, Scoop suggested a previously unheard free agency strategy the Bulls should consider.

Bulls wheeling and dealing for free agency cap room

The Bulls have been reported of putting up Kirk Hinrich in a trade so they can get extra money for this summer’s free agency

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Los Angeles Clippers

Chicago’s idea is to trade Hinrich and their 17th pick in tonights draft for a couple of expiring contracts or players who would have a one year minimun salary contract.  This way, they would have extra spending money to go after two of the big name free agents instead of one.   The list of big name guys includes: Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire and Joe Johnson. Carlos Boozer, Amare Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitzki, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and David Lee are also available.

Hinrich, a solid back up point guard, has a $9 million contract for next seson.  At this time, the Bulls have $20 million to spend.  If they could unleash Hinrich’s contract they would have around $30 million, which would be enough to sign two of the guys listed above.

This is a good move for the Bulls.  Hinrich has been a good player for the Bulls, but he is an over paid role player.  If the Bulls could get a D-Wade or Chris Bosh on top of getting Lebron,  adios Hinrich.

For the past three or four weeks, Bullshome.com has listed the top ten free agent options for the Chicago Bulls.  It has been fun.  Many have complained about the choice for number one and number two, but I am sticking to my opinion.  Since the countdown took so long to go through, it is only right for a recap.

10 Two Way Tie Between- Rudy Gay and John Salmons

March 28, 2010 Milwaukee, WI. Bradley Center..Memphis Grizzlies Rudy Gay had points against the Bucks today..Milwaukee Bucks won over the Memphis Grizzlies 108-103, in overtime. Mike McGinnis/CSM.
February 24, 2010 Milwaukee, WI. Bradley Center..Milwaukee Bucks John Salmons drives to the hoop, Salmons had 18 point against the Hornets tonight..Milwaukee Buck won over the New Orleans Hornets 115-95. Mike McGinnis/CSM.

Salmons was traded away by the Bulls at the February trade deadline in order to dump off contracts.  He went to Milwaukee and helped them earn a six seed in the playoffs.  Before he came they were on the outside looking in.  Rudy Gay is a young talented player with limited leadership skills.  Gay is on the verge of becoming a superstar but needs to play on a team besides the Memphis Grizzlies where he is the main attraction, because he shouldn’t be on any team.  Both players are respectable second options and great role players.

In 2006 the Dallas Mavericks made it to the finals, losing the championship to the Miami Heat with Dwayne Wade and Shaquille O’Neal.  The following year, Dirk Nowitzki was named the Most Valuable Player of the NBA.

The MVP year ended by getting swept in the first round by the eighth seeded Golden State Warriors in one of the biggest upset series in league history.
