Should Paxson have tried coaching?
The Chicago Bulls are still with out a head coach. They missed out on Mike D’antonio, or should I say, he missed out on the Bulls. Avery Johnson was thought to be the back-up plan, but then he wasn’t really interested. Then they won the draft lottery, and Johnson was re-interested. The Bulls are a young core of players who all were pretty good in college and where top draft picks. They all seem to have a good amount of potential still. Kirk Hinrich, Ben Gordon, Luol Deng, Tyrus Thomas, Joakim Noah and Tabo Sefolosha where all top picks and all have played 5 years or less in the NBA. This year they will add to the roster of young athletes. With the number one overall pick in the draft, they will be able to grab the best college basketball player.
So why haven’t the Bulls been able to find a premier head coach? On paper, this should be a position coaches should be interested. Taking on a young team they can mold into the players they want them to be. They have all played under Scott Skiles, at least for a little bit, who was a tough, grinding defensive minded head coach. So what kind of coach do they need? How about an offensive minded, players coach. But someone who still has knowledge of the game and has a tough character. Similar to that of Skiles, but not as tough. Well I have an idea, why not John Paxson?
John Paxson seems to think he has a team that can win. This team is full of guys Paxson has acquired. If Paxson believes in these Bulls so much, why doesn’t he hire himself, and take a shot at coaching.
Paxson obviously had ideas of what these guys could do to help out the team when he acquired them. Now he should take over, and put that plan to the test. Make any moves that need to be made to open up spots for whomever they draft number one.
This plan isn’t something that is gaurrunted to work out, we’ve seen what happens when other general managers higher themselves (see Isiah Thomas), but this is a different team, a young team with a lot of potential still. So Paxson, if this team is full of championship caliber players, why not give the coaching career a shot?
